Bass Player - Mar 2013 - Ben Shepherd
Along with their Seattle contemporaries Nirvana, Alice in Chains, and Pearl Jam, Soundgarden ruled the hard rock roost in the 1990s, packing arenas with their raw, brooding brand of rock & roll. After some time away, the band is back with sonic anchor Ben Shepherd on bass. We talk to Ben about his time in—and out of—the music biz, and how his dedication to songcraft informs his approach to playing bass.
Elsewhere, we catch up with Andy Fraser, whose big-bottomed bass on such classic rock chestnuts as “All Right Now” and “Mr. Big” captured the sound of a generation.
We continue to mine the highlights of Bass Player LIVE! by revisiting clinics with Duran Duran’s John Taylor and a roundtable discussion on music and social media with Janek Gwizdala, Juan Alderete, and Damian Erskine.
We take six sexy stompboxes for a spin in the Soundroom, and we party like it’s 1980 with our transcription, Tom Browne’s “Funkin’ for Jamaica (N.Y.)," with insight from funkateers Sekou Bunch and Marcus Miller. Dig in and get down!
