Keyboard Magazine’s October 2015 issue celebrates 40 years of Keyboard!

This month we say good-bye to our “30 years Ago Today” series, and begin to revisit the earliest issues of Contemporary Keyboard (the original title, later shortened to Keyboard).

We’ve had the privilege of interviewing loads of our musical heroes over the past 40 years. Inside there’s a handful that are most memorable to us including:

  • September/October, 1975 – Chick Corea
  • November/December, 1975 – Herbie Hancock
  • October 1983 – Oscar Peterson
  • July 1985 - Kate Bush
  • July 1995 – Stevie Wonder
  • July 2005 – Tori Amos
  • January 2015 – Lang Lang

Synths of the Stars: Check out the brief photo essay about what some of our most frequent flyers played back in the day:

  • Herbie Hancock
  • Josef Zawinul
  • Rick Wakeman
  • Tony Banks
  • Chick Corea
  • Geoff Downes

Retro Reprint: Joe Sample is the keyboard player with the Crusaders, a group he helped form in Texas in 1954. The Crusaders have recorded many albums for the Blue Thumb, Pacific Jazz, and Motown labels. Sample has also done extensive studio work in the Los Angeles area. See what he’s up to in our great interview, plus watch our 2010 video interview with him online!

Hot Licks: To continue our celebration, we asked some of today’s most accomplished professional players to show us their favorite & most memorable keyboard licks. Read on to add them to your own musical vocabulary.
